Project Description
Bauhaus Museum
Dessau, Germany
This is an international design competition to create a new museum for the Bauhaus art collection and teachings.
Concept:
The proposed building is conceived as a heavy stone block with a thin wood “liner” on the inside that together contain the precious objects of the Bauhaus collection. A large section is excavated from the stone block to create an inviting entry courtyard. The stone block is also subject to local exterior forces that carve away at its mass such as existing pedestrian paths and the memorial and fountain. Furthermore, the mass is carved away to showcase select art objects from the collection and to create strategic views outwards to the park and to the city.
